Numa edição marcada por controvérsias, os vencedores da noite foram "The Power of the Dog", "West Side Story" e "Succession".
Para os Globos de Ouro, este foi um ano atípico e marcado por polêmicas. Na cerimónia deste domingo (9/1), sem transmissão televisiva, passadeira vermelha e público, os prémios foram anunciados pelas redes sociais e no site da organização, e não, não foi devido à pandemia de covid-19. A 79ª edição foi alvo de boicote por parte de personalidades do cinema das várias áreas, devido à falta de diversidade e representatividade no painel júri da Associação de Imprensa Estrangeira de Hollywood (HFPA) responsáveis pela eleição dos nomeados e vencedores. Além disto, também foi noticiado que alguns integrantes, aceitaram presentes luxuosos dos estúdios para serem atribuídos prémios às suas produções.
Polémicas à parte, vamos aos prémios.
O filme western "The Power of The Dog", o remake de Steven Spielberg de "West Side Story" e a série da HBO "Succession" obtiveram 3 globos dourados cada um, tendo os dois primeiros ganho Melhor Filme Dramático e Melhor Filme Musical respetivamente e, o último, Melhor Série Dramática.
Esta edição fez ainda história pela primeira premiação de uma mulher transgênero com o prémio de Melhor Atriz em Série Dramática a ser entregue a Michaela Jaé Rodriguez pela sua prestação em "Pose".
